Open a new window, black background, approx. 300 x 300 pixels.
(Don't worry, we're not going
to use this on the web, so size doesn't count right now.)
Using the Spray Paint Tool, paint four large splotches of
paint into the window.
Example Settings:
Create the pattern with the Smudge Tool by dragging it across your
splotches. Be sure to drag some black into the red and red into the
black. You may have to practice with this a bit, otherwise you
could end up with a lopsided texture.
Crop to remove the edges, rather than try to smudge all the way to the
edge. No sense in ruining a perfect pattern by trying to touch up
the edges.
Save your textures to a separate "texture" folder. When you want text or an
object to be made with this texture open it and use the Fill Tool to pour it
into your image.
For the example text I poured my texture into the text, expanded
the selection by 1 and added a drop shadow in red, twice. (horizontal and
vertical set to 0).
Just a little side note. For a 3D illusion, take your original four
splotches of paint (if you made them round, I haven't tested this
with other shapes), and pour the new background behind them!
