Damaged Text
This type of effect if often seen in WARGAMES. It's just text
but with some damaged edges. It gives a great effect when
setting the text RED on BLACK background, and displaying
the word "TOP SECRET" .. Yes, that kind of effect!
But first the steps.
1. Take a greyscaled image, with black background and
white foreground.
2. Type a text and make it large enough.
IMPORTANT: Do not release the selection around the text !!
On the menu bar select IMAGE/SPECIAL FILTERS/ADD NOISE..
3. Choose RANDOM NOISE with 100% setting.
4. Release the selection
On the menu bar, select IMAGE/SPECIAL FILTERS/DESPECKLE
5. Do this twice. This will scatter the random noise
and makes the pixels bigger.
On the menu bar, select IMAGE/SPECIAL FILTERS/DESPECKLE
6. Choose DILATE to make the text interior as much solid as
possible.. We only want the edges to be damaged..
On the menu bar select COLORS/ADJUST/GAMMA CORRECTION
7. Set GAMMA-correction to 0.33
On the menu bar select colors/adjust/highlight/midtone/shadow
8. Add that much shadow
that the grey parts dissapear as much to your satisfaction,
but keep the white text. When increasing the SHADOW-value,
more grey parts dissapear. Make sure not too much of the
interior dissapears..
Note: I used a shadow value of 100, other values set to 0 (zero). lbc
On the menu bar select COLORS/DECREASE COLORS
9. Now decrease the Colordepth to 2, and optional, change the white
color into red, by editing the palette..
Note: To edit the palette, click on the foreground color, (the white box), on the palette bar. A window will open with a lot of little
squares in it. Double click on the white square to open another window. Click on the red
square, click ok, click ok.
10. Change colordepth back to 16.7 million
11. Select the text by drawing a large rectangle and modify the selection
so the background transparency is set to black.
12. Modify the selection feather to 1.
13. Copy and paste the selection into a new image.
14. Sharpen once if you like.. And DONE !
