How do you insert one image into another image file without
losing/changing the colors of the source input ?

I've just spent a couple of days doing exactly what you are describing. This is the process I followed.
I opened the files that I wanted to merge into one file.
I opened a new file with 16 million colors (24
bit), and copied all of the other images into the new one.
I then converted this image to 256 colors and
saved the palette.
Then I loaded that palette to each individual image. That way they all used the
same colors.
When I originally created my images I saved them as 16 million colors before merging
them and converting to 256 colors and saving the palette. Utterly confused? I hope not. It's an easy
technique,really.
How do I add color to the text and where are the two over-lapping colored rectangles that are
supposed to yield a color palette for the text?
Select your colors prior to adding the text. The foreground color is the color the text will appear in.
See the glossary for the location of the color rectangles in your color palette.
